Let’s Talk About Year-End

As the year gets busier, bookkeeping can be easy to push aside. Between serving customers, managing orders, and planning for the holidays, it may feel like there is always something more urgent to do.

You do not have to tackle everything at once. A few small steps now can make your records easier to review and help you begin the new year feeling more organized.

1. Gather receipts and supporting documents

Set aside time to collect receipts, invoices, bills, and other documents from the year. Check your email, paper files, and any apps or folders where you save business records. Give each item a clear home so you can find it when you need it.

If you are missing a receipt or have a question about a transaction, make a note of it instead of guessing. A short list of open questions is much easier to work through than trying to remember details months later.

2. Review your income and expenses

Look through your bookkeeping records for transactions that still need attention. Check for items without a clear category, duplicate entries, or purchases that need a receipt or explanation.

This is also a good time to compare your records with the statements and information you already have. If something does not look right, flag it for review. Avoid changing an entry just to make the numbers appear to match; first find out what caused the difference.

3. Reconcile your accounts

Reconciliation is the process of comparing the transactions in your books with statements from your bank and other accounts. Working through this regularly can help you spot missing, duplicated, or incorrectly recorded transactions.

Make a list of any accounts that still need to be reconciled and note the latest statement you have for each. If an item is unfamiliar, keep the supporting details together so it can be reviewed carefully.

4. Check customer invoices and vendor bills

Take a look at open invoices and bills. Are any customer payments still waiting to be recorded? Are there bills that have been paid but still appear open in your records? Note anything that needs follow-up and keep the related communication or payment information with it.

Clear records can make it easier to understand what is still outstanding and what has already been handled.

5. Make a note of important business changes

Did you buy equipment, change how you handle payments, add a new service, or make another significant change this year? Keep a simple record of what changed and when. Your bookkeeper or tax professional can tell you what information they need and how the change should be handled.

6. Save a short list for your next review

Before you move on to the next task, write down anything that needs an answer: transactions you do not recognize, missing documents, accounts that need review, or records you are not sure how to organize. Include the date and any details you remember.

That list gives you a clear starting point for your next bookkeeping session and helps keep questions from getting lost in the shuffle.

Start the new year with a little more clarity.

Why I started Amazing Grace Bookkeeping

If someone had told me years ago that I would one day own a bookkeeping business while finishing my accounting degree, I'm not sure I would have believed them.

My journey into finance wasn't something I planned from the beginning. Like many people, I started by taking opportunities as they came and learning everything I could along the way. Over the years, I discovered that I genuinely enjoyed working with numbers, solving problems, and helping organizations understand their finances. What began as a job eventually grew into a career and a passion.

Today, I have more than 10 years of experience working in finance and accounting, and I'm currently entering my final year of college as I complete my Accounting degree. Returning to school later in life wasn't always easy, but it has been one of the most rewarding decisions I've ever made. Every class, every late-night study session, and every challenge has brought me one step closer to my goal.

As my knowledge and experience continued to grow, so did my desire to help others. That's what led me to create Amazing Grace Bookkeeping.

One of the things I value most is supporting local small businesses. I truly believe small, family-owned businesses are the backbone of our communities. They are the businesses sponsoring local sports teams, donating to fundraisers, supporting school programs, and showing up when their neighbors need help. They're the families sitting in the stands cheering on local athletes, attending pie suppers, volunteering at community events, and helping make our towns a better place to live.

These businesses aren't just places to shop—they're part of the fabric of our communities.

For a while, it felt like small businesses were fighting an uphill battle against larger corporations and online retailers. But recently, I've noticed something encouraging happening. More people are making a conscious effort to shop locally and support the businesses in their own communities. We're seeing sales tax revenues increase in many local communities, which is often a sign that residents are investing back into the places they call home.

Community pride is growing.

People are recognizing the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs, family-owned businesses, and hometown organizations. When local businesses succeed, communities thrive. Jobs are created, community programs are funded, and dollars stay local.

That shift gives me hope for the future.

Through Amazing Grace Bookkeeping, my goal is to help those businesses succeed by providing accurate, organized, and reliable bookkeeping services. Business owners already wear enough hats. They shouldn't have to spend their evenings buried in receipts, struggling with spreadsheets, or worrying about whether their books are accurate.
